Arizona Ladies Support Gun Rights

Despite what the “media” and anti-rights, gun-control proponents would like you to believe, women are a big part of the firearms community.  There were plenty of women at the Second Amendment Rally at the Arizona Capitol yesterday, and here are just a few of the lovely ladies of all ages that came out to show their support for gun rights.

Here’s a relatively unbiased news story from local news station ABC 15:

Enemy at the Gates: A Warning for All SHOT Show Attendees and Exhibitors

shotshowlogoI just received some disturbing news about this year’s SHOT Show (Shooting, Hunting, Outdoor Trade Show) from a well respected member of the firearms industry.  The mainstream media will be at the 2013 SHOT Show in force with the express purpose of furthering their anti-gun agenda.

There will be a tremendous amount of hostile media at SHOT Show this year.  Major “news” outlets, including CNN and NPR have been contacting exhibitors to secure interviews, and you’d better believe that they are not going to be there to get the scoop on the latest muzzle brake or concealed carry purse.  Their only purpose will be to humiliate and shame those of us in the firearms community and they will be working very hard to coax us in to speaking to them so they can use our words against us.

Here’s the best advice I’ve heard to counter this unwelcome infiltration: DON’T SPEAK TO THE MAINSTREAM MEDIA AT SHOT SHOW.  My friend in the industry made some suggestions that I’d like to pass on –  Be polite, and rather than say “no comment”, just tell them that you are busy and can’t talk right now.  Do not forget that these people are not reasonable people and do not want a discussion.  Please realize that despite your best efforts, there is no answer or statement you can give that can’t and won’t be used against all of us.

Those of us that will be at SHOT Show legitimately will be there to learn, make and renew connections and do business. The anti-gun media will be there to confirm their preconceived notion that none of us are rational human beings.

If you know anyone that will be going to SHOT Show next week, please let them know about this unsettling development. And remember that the best (and likely only) way to mitigate the damage the anti-gun media plans to inflict upon the firearms community is to ignore them.

UPDATE:  The mainstream media’s plan to bash SHOT Show and vilify the good people at NSSF is already underway.  This ridiculously inaccurate article from The Guardian was posted online just a few hours ago.

Gun Blogger Rendezvous 2012

It’s been a few weeks since we returned from the 7th Annual Gun Blogger Rendezvous, and I think I have finally recovered from the non-stop, awesome shooty goodness that took place over the three days that we attended.  It was well worth the time and expense to fly out to Reno, Nevada, and we’ve already decided that this will be a must-attend event for us next year.

Our host, Mr. Completely, did an outstanding job of putting Gun Blogger Rendezvous together, and I’d like to thank him profusely for his efforts. All of the activities went off without a hitch (and there were a ton of them), and there seemed to be just enough time to get a bit of rest in between the many scheduled events and festivities.

The best part about Gun Blogger Rendezvous was not only having a great time with other bloggers/shooting enthusiasts, but also supporting a very worthy cause: Project Valour-IT.  Mr. Completely, once again, did an incredible job of putting together a fund raiser raffle with a prize table that rivaled many larger events I’ve been to.  We all dug deep in our pockets to give as much as we could – the ice bucket overflowed with medium to large bills, which brought a tear to my eye and made me feel very proud to know that we built that!

So, thanks again to Mr. Completely, the sponsors and all the attendees (and Robert) for putting up with me at the 2012 Gun Blogger Rendezvous, I enjoyed every minute of my time meeting, talking and shooting with everyone and I’ll be posting more about my favorite moments of GBR throughout the month.

Shoot More, Talk Less

Despite my better judgment, I gave in to curiosity and watched a video over the weekend that I wished I hadn’t.  The video included the ridiculous statement that women will never be treated equally at the range, and it went on to paint almost all men in the shooting community as misogynistic knuckle draggers.  While there have been others that have done a fine job of chiming in on this inaccurate video, I feel the need to add my 2 cents.

While likely unintentional, this video does a huge disservice to those of us that are trying to encourage more women to participate in shooting and the shooting sports (dissing men is not cool either).  There’s no doubt that learning to shoot can be an intimidating experience (for both sexes), and adding to the fear and anxiety with a poorly thought out rant is extremely counterproductive to the cause.

I’m not an expert shooter, but I’ve been shooting for just over 3 years, and for the last two, I’ve been very involved in USPSA and IDPA.  I try to get at least 500-1000 down range every month, and that means lots of time at multiple ranges.  I’ve visited dozens of gun shops, pawn shops and gun shows in several states and I am hard pressed to come up with more than a couple of examples where I was treated badly.  In every case where someone was less than friendly to me, they were treating BOTH men and women with the same amount of disrespect.  In other words, it’s not you, it’s them.

I’m not saying the shooting community doesn’t have undesirable characters, of course it does (just like every other segment of the general population).  What I am saying is that if someone is giving you unwarranted attention or is treating you with disrespect at the range or gun store, it’s extremely unlikely it’s because you are female.

I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again, the people that make up the shooting community are the kindest and most generous people I have ever met.  I am extremely grateful for the help I’ve gotten from the men and women who have taken the time to help me become a better shooter, and I welcome their continued advice, solicited or not.

Make Your Vote Count, Vote for Me

Outdoor Channel is sending a contest winner to the NRA Annual Meeting and Convention in St. Louis April 12th-15th, and the lucky person gets to attend the show AND walk the convention floor with an Outdoor Channel camera crew and cover the event for them.

Thinking that it would be super cool for a gun blogger nobody to win, I entered the contest by submitting a video, and now it’s time for judging!  Outdoor Channel is encouraging those of us who entered to ask our friends to head over to their site and astroturf comment on their favorite entry and give a “thumbs up” to their favorite video.

I would be most grateful if you could mosey over to this post on the Outdoor Channel Community website and give me (Jaci) a “thumbs up”, a five-star rating and/or a supportive comment.  You do need to create an account, but Outdoor Channel makes it easy to sign up for their community site with your Facebook or Twitter account.  Once you’ve left your comment or thumbs up, please come back here to let me know and I’ll do my best to give you and/or your blog a shout-out on camera if I win.

Thanks for your help!

Here’s To The Next 100 Years, Arizona

Happy 100th Birthday, Arizona!

Both Robert and I are second-generation natives, and to say we love Arizona would be a huge understatement. Despite what the pants-peeing media would like you to believe, this state is populated with some of the kindest and most generous people I have ever met.  The rugged individualism and independent spirit that Arizonans have held on to for a century have allowed us to remain a (relatively) free state.  We are passionate about our freedoms and liberties and we’re willing to go to the mat to protect them.

If you don’t like the sound of that and you’re looking for a place to hang your hat, please continue traveling West until you hit California.  Unlike Arizona, they’ll be more than happy to tell you how to eat, sleep and live.

Sig Sauer P938 – New at SHOT Show 2012

Sig Sauer P238 and P938 side by side imageOne of the hottest guns on the floor at SHOT Show 2012 was the Sig Sauer P938,  a brand new pistol modeled after Sig’s wildly popular P238, but chambered in 9mm.

Designed for the concealed carry market, the P938 is very similar to the P238.  So similar, in fact, it’s difficult to tell the difference between the two at first glance (click on image above). It’s only about a quarter of an inch longer than the P238, so it retains it’s ease of concealment, SigP238 and P938 backstrap differences imageand as you can see from the image of the two backstraps, the only noticeable difference in this area is the more aggressive checkering (to assist with recoil control of the larger caliber).  If you’ve been considering purchasing the P238, but have hesitated because you would like to carry something more powerful than the .380 ACP, the Sig P938 may fit your needs perfectly.

Sig Sauer P938 Blackwood in 9mm imageI haven’t had a chance to shoot the P938 (yet),  but I was able to get my hands on it during SHOT Show.  The ambidextrous safety was stiff enough that I wouldn’t worry about it disengaging accidentally while carrying, but I was able to thumb it on and off without a great deal of effort (which is not the case with many of the pocket pistols I’ve tried).  The trigger broke cleanly, and while listed on the Sig Sauer website as a 5lb pull, it felt just a bit heavier to me.  I didn’t notice a difference in the grip between the P938 and the P238, and despite feeling slightly awkward to hold (like any other pocket pistol), it didn’t feel like it was going to fall out of my hand.  When the extended seven round magazine was inserted (sold separately, it ships with a six round mag), I found that the extended mag made it more comfortable to grip the P938.

SigP938 Extreme in 9mm imageSig Sauer is planning on initially offering the P938  in four different flavors – Blackwood (MSRP $809), Equinox (MSRP $823), Rosewood (MSRP $795), and my favorite, Extreme (Shown at left, MSRP – $823).  The Extreme includes all the bells and whistles of the other models, including SIGLITE Night Sights, and features Hogue G-10 Extreme Grips.  Not only are they super cool looking, they provide a solid, aggressive grip without being ouchy or pinchy (to put it in technical terms).

Using the street price vs. MSRP of the P238 as a measure, you can expect the P938 to sell for around $100 less than MSRP.  While this places the P938 at the upper end of pricing for pocket pistols, keep in mind that you are getting an all-metal, mini 1911 with night sights.  I’m looking forward to making one of these go bang, and when I do, I’ll be sure to tell you all about it.
